COLDWATER (WTVB) - The Branch County high school sports scene was quiet on Friday following the Thursday night varsity football openers and the action won’t pick up again until Tuesday following the break for the Labor Day weekend. There was one football game in the area Friday night with Athens losing 12-0 at Climax-Scotts.

The Tigers have pulled to within a half game of the lead in the American League Central after Justin Verlander struck out eight over seven innings of one run ball in Detroit’s 7-1 win last night over the White Sox in Chicago to open up a 4-game series in the Windy City. Coming up at U.S. Cellular Field, it’s a day-night doubleheader today between the Tigers and the White Sox.

In college football last night, it was a rout for Michigan State in their opener as the number-8 Spartans streaked past Jacksonville State 45-7 in East Lansing. It was 38-0 at halftime. The defending Big 10 champions face a big challenge on the road next Saturday night when they play at third ranked Oregon. On today’ schedule, kicking off at noon, Michigan is taking on Appalachian State at the Big House while Western Michigan is at Purdue. And in a 3:30 game, number-17 Notre Dame hosts Rice.

And in motor sports, Kevin Harvick on Friday grabbed the pole for Sunday night’s Sprint Cup Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, while his teammate and team co-owner, Tony Stewart, qualified 12th in his return to racing. Our live coverage of the race on the radio starts at 6:30 tomorrow night.
