DETROIT (WTVB) - Patrick Eaves scored in the seventh round of the shootout to help the Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals in the opener of a home-and-home set on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. The first six shooters on either side failed to find the net before Eaves buried a wrister into the left corner in the seventh round. Jimmy Howard then stopped the Capitals try for the tie to give Detroit the victory, which was Mike Babcock’s 400th as coach of the Red Wings. Howard made 26 saves in the win. The rematch is tomorrow afternoon in Washington.
