Immigrants help to push up Michigan's population in 2013

Michigan Census Review
Michigan Census Review

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The state’s population is growing again, but there are still a lot of people leaving, hoping for greener pastures.  The Department of Technology Management and Budget says 113,000 were born in Michigan last year, and 89,000 died.   The net gain was 24,000, but over 28,000 decided to leave the state. Immigration made the difference.  If there had not been over 17,000 people from overseas who viewed Michigan as that greener pasture, we would not have had any gain in population at all. It gives Michigan a net growth of about 13,000 people, which put Michigan at 34th in the ranking of the states.   But because a lot of people are still leaving the state, we ranked 49th for positive domestic migration.
