COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, in boys and girls basketball, it was a clean sweep for Coldwater with the Cardinals winning their varsity and j-v games against Galesburg-Augusta. In the boys action that we had on the radio from Galesburg, the Cardinals led all the way in beating the Rams 53-40. Coldwater was ahead 26-18 at the half and extended the lead to 39-26 after three quarters and stayed the course for the 13-point victory. Nate Waterbury had a game high 12 points for the Cardinals while our McDonalds Player of the Game for Coldwater was Morgan Sims. He came off the bench in the first half when the Cardinals found themselves in some foul trouble and finished with 4 points and 4 rebounds. Coldwater’s second straight win improved their record to 3-9 while Galesburg-Augusta slipped to 4-7. The Cardinals next game is Friday at Sturgis. In the j-v contest last night, Coldwater defeated the Rams 58-12 with 12 points for Collin Warner and 10 for Austin Krzeminski.
The girls games were played in Coldwater and the Lady Cardinals varsity downed the Rams 49-26 to improve their record to 6-8. MacKenzie Galloway had a game high 13 points, while Carlee Smoker scored 11. In the j-v contest, Coldwater won 42-30 with 12 points each for Stacy Guzy and Megan Hoath. We’ll have varsity doubleheader action on the radio Friday night when the Cardinals girls and boys teams play at Sturgis.
Elsewhere last night, in girl’s hoops, in a Branch County matchup, Union City was a winner at Quincy 29-18. Katie Birch had 8 points in the victory along with 7 rebounds while Haley Harty added 7 points. For winless Quincy, Katie Spalding and Jordan Kotwicki had 6 points apiece. Union City improved to 3-7 in the Big Eight Conference and 6-10 overall. And in a boys game at Tekonsha, the Indians beat Hillsdale Will Carleton Academy 49-34 with 19 points for Riley Lloyd along with 11 points and 8 rebounds for Jeremy Scherer.
On tonight’s high school schedule, weather permitting, in boys basketball, it’s Quincy at Centreville. In wrestling, it’s the state tournament team districts. The Division Four district at Bronson has been postponed, while Quincy and Union City compete at the Homer District. Coldwater’s Division Two Team District is tomorrow night at Sturgis. Coldwater's boys and girls bowling match against Pennfield has been cancelled at the M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek.
