IONIA, MI (WTVB) - Two State Prison employees have been suspended indefinitely as the investigation into the escape of convicted killer Michael Elliot is beginning to reach some preliminary conclusions. It seems at the very least, prison employees were asleep at the wheel, and at worst, were helping Elliot who got through several layers of security to get out of the medium security facility in Ionia last Sunday. Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan says so far there is no evidence of the later, but it’s being explored.
A Lieutenant and a corrections officer have been singled out, charged with dereliction of duty, violating security and other counts. Both worked I the prison’s control center.
The systems all seemed to be working, but were overlooked or ignored.
Attorney General Bill Schutte has now also announced he will do a separate investigation into the escape.
