BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, a stunning upset at Bronson in boys basketball as the Vikings earned their first win of the season by knocking off the previously undefeated Battle Creek St. Philip Tigers 53-52. St. Philip came into the game at 13-0 and the third-ranked Class-D team in the state. Class-C Bronson is now 1-12. Bronson outscored St Phillip 21-13 in the 4th quarter for the win. Sean Kenny had 14 points and Eric Toledo had 10 for the Vikings. The Vikings made it a sweep on the night by also winning the girls game 47-38 over St. Philip to improve their record to 8-6. The contests were make-up games for the doubleheader that was snowed out on January 28th.
Wednesday night in wrestling, Bronson’s team season came to an end when the Vikings lost to Springport 43-26 in the semi-finals of the Springport Division Four Regional. Springport went on to win the Regional title with a victory over Constantine. Seven wrestlers from Bronson will be competing Saturday along with 6 other qualifiers from Branch County at the individual regionals.
Tonight in high school sports, in varsity girls basketball, it’s Quincy at Jonesville. The reserve hoops schedule includes Coldwater vs. Gull Lake with the boys action in Coldwater while the girls play at Gull Lake. The freshman games tip-off at 4:15 followed by the junior varsity at around 5:45. And tonight in gymnastics, it’s Coldwater at Saline.
Yesterday in boys and girls bowling, Coldwater competed in the conference semi-finals at Nottkes in Battle Creek. In the varsity action against Marshall, the Coldwater girls beat the Redhawks while the Cardinals boys team lost to Marshall. Cassidy Wolff led the girls with a 209 while Kira Mobley rolled a 204. The boys top score came from Austen Reichhart with a 259. The Coldwater boys j-v team defeated Sturgis in a roll-off with a 185 for Shawn Johnson. And the j-v girls squad beat Jonesville with a 137 for Sarah Ivarsson.
In middle school sports yesterday, in girls basketball, Coldwater took 3 out of 4 games from Harper Creek with a sweep for the 8th grade teams in Coldwater and a split in the seventh grade contests at Harper Creek with a loss for the “B” squad. In the 8th grade “A” game, Coldwater beat the Beavers 32-9 with 10 points for Jasmine Wellet. Coldwater won the “B” game 23-12 with 10 points for Faith Scott and 10 rebounds for Kaci White. Coldwater took the seventh grade “A” game 30-25 with 10 points for Tyler Scheid. In the “B” contest, the Beavers beat Coldwater in overtime 21-18 with 9 points for Anna Tappenden.
