COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It was a tragic ending to a missing person’s case involving a 21-year old southeast Michigan man with a Branch County connection to the case. Authorities say the body of Johnny Ray Honeycutt of Macomb County’s Lenox Township was discovered over the weekend in Harper Woods in a car in the parking lot of a Taco Bell. An autopsy is planned for later this week but police say there are no indications of foul play at this time.
Last Friday, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department issued a news release on Honeycutt’s disappearance. They said he had gone to Indianapolis to visit family and last Tuesday sent a message to relatives that he was on his way back to Michigan. However, he never arrived home. Detectives reported that Honeycutt’s cell phone was found by a truck driver at the I-69 Coldwater Rest Area/Welcome Center . About 1 pm Tuesday, police say Honeycutt sent his mother a text which said he had crossed the Indiana state line and was in Michigan. A half hour later, his mother received another text but this time it was from the truck driver who located the phone at the rest stop about 5 mile north of the state border.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Harper Woods Department of Public Safety at 313-343-2530.
