COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - There were fewer than expected slide offs and other accidents reported last night to Branch County Central Dispatch considering the heavy snow and drifting that ultimately prompted all schools in county and most across the area to cancelled classes for today. This morning, the calls to 9-1-1 started to pick up from motorists who need help being towed out of the median or a ditch. No injuries have been reported.
One of the collisions last night was on U-S 12 at Quincy-Grange Road around 8:20 pm. Quincy Fire Department first responders were sent to check it out, but again nobody was hurt.
A huge chain reaction pile-up on I-94 near the Dowagiac exit involving an estimated 40-vehicles, shut down the interstate for most of last evening into the early morning hours. Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Kirk says it began when a semi went out of control in near white out conditions and the other vehicles, including nearly two dozen semi’s collided as they y tried to hit their brakes, and slid into each other. Police officials are calling it a small miracle that the six people who were taken to hospitals for treatment, all suffered minor injuries. Other motorists were trapped on the interstate for hours as drive time traffic backed up for miles.
