ST IGNACE, MI (WTVB) - At least one Kalamazoo family can say this nasty winter saved their lives. If it hadn’t been so cold this winter, Jonathan and Leigh Born of Kalamazoo might have had to ditch in the freezing waters of Lake Huron, without much chance for survival on Monday. Instead they are home and happy after their pilot simply made a smooth landing on the ice.
They were on board a one-engine plane flying from Mackinac Island to St. Ignace when the engine stalled two miles from shore. The landing was so smooth that her three small children never even knew anything was wrong, and Mrs. Born says one of them slept through the whole ordeal.
They were rescued by police and firemen on snowmobiles.
