COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County Jail's first overcrowding emergency declaration of 2014 is expected to be issed this week. Such a declaration is made when the jail goes over its rated capacity of 142 inmates for seven consecutive days; Friday marked the sixth day in a row over capacity, with 153 inmates currently lodged. After the seventh day, the courts are notified, and a declaration is usually made. When that happens, a number of inmates have their sentences reduced, enough to allow the jail population to shrink to 90% of its rated capacity.
