BETHEL TOWNSHIP, BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - A Branch County man fell through the ice on a pond last night after he went out to rescue his Doberman dog that had also gone into the water behind his home in Bethel Township. However, everyone is warm and dry today following the somewhat scary experience for Brian Wilbur and his canine friend. 9-1-1 got the call around ten p.m. from the Wilbur residence at 234 Dandy Drive, located just north of Central Road and east of U-S 12. It’s a private, aerated pond and Wilbur was able to remove himself from the water just as the first Bronson firefighters reached the scene. He was taken inside to warm up and firemen then were able to focus on successfully saving the dog. Michigan State Police also responded to the incident.
Authorities remind everyone after the few occasional thaw periods we’ve had in between the long frozen stretches of this winter, make sure that when you head out onto any iced over body of water you always proceed with extra caution, safety and common sense.
