Tigers win preseason opener over Florida Southern 12-0

LAKELAND, FL (WTVB) - The Tigers took down Florida Southern College in a 12-0 rout yesterday in Lakeland, Florida in Detroit’s annual warm-up exhibition opener as they prepare for their Grapefruit League schedule which starts today. Daniel Fields and Eugenio Suarez each homered for the Tigers while Steven Moya doubled and tripled in his two plate appearances with 4 rbi’s. Moya is a 6-foot-6 outfield prospect.

Drew VerHagen got the start for Detroit and pitched two perfect innings while Robbie Ray struck out five in two innings of relief to earn the win. Ray is one of the players acquired in the Doug Fister deal with the Nationals.

This afternoon, the Tigers will take on the Atlanta Braves in Lake Buena Vista before hosting the Braves tomorrow in Lakeland.
