COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Some things are reopening today but schools in Branch County remain closed for the second day in a row. The snow has basically moved away from Michigan except for lake-effect snow on the west side of the state. The arctic freeze remains the major issue. The official low temperature for Coldwater Monday was 15 below zero while at one point, with the strong gusty winds, it felt like 40 below zero with the wind chill values. Thankfully, most people have heeded the warnings about the extreme cold and bundled up or just stayed inside.
The Community Health Center of Branch County Emergency Room said this morning, that so far, they haven’t had to treat any cases of frost bite or hypothermia. However, authorities tell us about a few close calls with motorists in stranded vehicles where they weren’t dressed for the occasion, even some wearing shorts and quite a few with no safety kits in their vehicles in case of emergencies. Branch County Road Commission crews were back at work early today trying to get ahead of the curve which remains difficult with periods of blowing snow still a problem creating drifting.
