EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Michigan State squandered a 17-point lead late in regulation against Ohio State but the 5th-ranked Spartans regrouped to win in overtime 72-68 with MSU handing the number-3 Buckeyes their first loss of the season. Michigan State’s victory in their Big Ten home opener improved their record to 14-1 and 3-and-0 in the conference while OSU slipped to 15-1 and 2-1 in league play. The Spartans needed a Keith Appling 3-pointer with 27.5 seconds left in the extra period to break a 66-66 tie. Appling finished with a game-high 20 points while Adreian Payne battled through a right foot sprain to pour in 18 points off the bench and Gary Harris supplied 13 points in the hard-fought win.
The Spartans next game is Saturday afternoon when they host Minnesota at the Breslin Center. Tonight’s schedule includes Western Michigan at home against Toledo in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
