QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - Three Branch County fire departments fought a house fire early today in the bone chilling cold in Ovid Township. Lakeland firemen were toned out first by 9-1-1 Central Dispatch shortly before 4 a.m. and when they arrived at the 2-story residence of Dan Nichols, they found smoke showing on the second floor of the home on East Central Road, just east of Lawrence Road. Nichols, a detective sergeant at the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, along with his wife and two teenage sons, quickly fled the home and escaped injury.
Lakeland Fire Chief Paul Searing said an electrical short in Nichols bedroom woke him up when the power went out and after checking a breaker box in the basement, he returned upstairs to find smoke and alerted his family. Flames spread from there and while most of the fire damage was confined to the second story, Searing said there was some first floor fire loss as well. The Quincy and Coldwater fire departments assisted Lakeland. The last Lakeland unit cleared the scene around 5-and-a half hours later.
