Democrats launch online unemployment counter

U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) speaks during the Reuters Financial Regulation Summit in Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- Ways and Means Committee Democrats have launched an online counter to track the growing number of Americans who are losing their unemployment insurance.  Ranking member Congressman Sander Levin says that the counter illustrates the approximately 72-thousand Americans who are losing benefits, on average, every week, the equivalent of one person every eight seconds.

"The urgency increases every day that passes without House Republican support for an extension," says Levin.

Benefits for 1.3-million Americans expired on December 28th.
