COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Here is apparently another negative effect from this week’s arctic assault: higher gas prices. Prices have spiked up at least 15 cents a gallon in most of Branch County and across Michigan to nearly $3.45 a gallon. Gas Buddy.com suspects it’s because refineries don’t work very well in super-cold temperatures. They cite various shutdown or maintenance issues including for Speedway, a subsidiary of Marathon, which suffered several setbacks at its refinery in Detroit.
Now that the polar vortex has returned to where it belongs, at the North Pole, Gas Buddy analyst Patrick Dehaan expects prices will quickly recede. He says they never drop as fast as they rise, but they will drop..
