DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers have announced that ace starter Justin Verlander underwent successful core muscle repair surgery yesterday. Verlander will have rehabilitation for the next six weeks and will then be re-evaluated. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said they fully expect him to take part in spring training and be ready to compete at the beginning of the 2014 season. Verlander, who will turn 31 next month, was injured while working out in late December. The Tigers aren’t giving up details about the lower body injury but it’s believed to be similar to the sports hernia that bothered Migeul Cabrera for much of last year.
The first spring workout for Detroit pitchers and catchers in Lakeland, Florida is set for February 14th. The defending American League Central champions open the 2014 regular season at home against Kansas City on March 31st.
