EVANSTON, IL (WTVB) - Fourth-ranked Michigan State struggled for the first 30 minutes last night against Northwestern before the Spartans pulled away for a 54-40 win at Evanston. It was the ninth straight victory for MSU giving them sole possession of the lead in the Big Ten with a 5-0 league record. The 16-1 Spartans were led by Gary Harris with 14 points while Keith Appling had 11. The Michigan State defense held the Wildcats to 28 percent shooting and forced 12 turnovers.
Last night’s victory marks the first time in school history the Spartans have won their first eight games away from East Lansing. Michigan State stays on the road this weekend for a Saturday night contest at Illinois.
