COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency hasn’t issued any updated flu advisories in the past 2 weeks since on January Third when it indicated that counts of confirmed cases were still relatively low in the tri county area. However, there have been six flu related deaths in west Michigan this season, three of them in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties.
The most recent death occurred this week as doctors continue to monitor the spread of the H1N1 virus. But, one local health official says that those deaths are not unusual. Linda Vail, the Director of Kalamazoo County Health and Human Services says the victims normally have other underlying ailments that have weakened their system. She still recommends getting a flu shot if you want to avoid becoming a statistic, or just dodge the misery you will suffer if you catch it.
