QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it was a busy weekend for wrestling with a pair of tournaments in the county. Coldwater and Union City were among the 15 teams that competed at Quincy in the Shawn Cockrell Memorial. Coldwater finished in fourth place, Quincy tied for tenth and Union City tied for 14th place. Coldwater’s Cooper Murphy and Austin Siegel each finished first in their divisions. Also placing for the Cardinals were Nooh Aljabaly with a runner up finish and Randall Linton and Chris Vandenhout finishing in third place. For Quincy, Dalton Hard placed second, Luke Wiser tied for third, and placing fourth were Kalieb Miller, Hunter Winger and Jacob Modert.
At Bronson Saturday, it was the Clark Walker Invitational and the host Vikings finished second in the 5 team field. Bronson defeated Kalamazoo Loy Norrix, Blissfield, Bangor and Battle Creek Central before losing to Lawton in the finals. Going 5-0 on the day for the Vikings were Skyler Riker, Mykal Kline and Jukoada Sexton while finishing 4-1 were Kahle Scheenks, Brett Burtrum and Ben Byler. Also with a winning record was Laine Houtz at 3-2.
In gymnastics, Coldwater’s varsity and j-v squads competed with 7 other teams Saturday at the Lowell Invitational. The varsity took fifth place, posting a 121.325 to earn the third of their needed four qualifying scores to advance to the MHSAA regionals. The j-v team finished sixth at 106.325. Two Lady Cardinals brought home medals from the tournament. Junior Jenny Daoud had a banner day with a personal best in three events and the all-around, earning a fourth place finish on both the uneven bars and beam and taking sixth place in the overall competition. Senior Becca Harmon finished 7th on bars with a fall on the dismount keeping her from a top three showing in the event. Harmon just missed medaling in the all-around with an 11th place finish. Tomorrow, Coldwater will host Adrian in the old gym in a conference match starting at 6 pm. And the gymnastics team is hosting a youth clinic this week on Friday to raise money for a leotard to wear at their cancer awareness competition in February. There are two sessions available for ages 2-5 from 4:30-5:30 and then ages 6 and up from 6-8 pm.
On tonight’s high school sports schedule, there’s girls basketball and it’s a Branch County matchup with Coldwater at home against Bronson and we’ll have the game on the radio with our live coverage beginning at seven o’clock and we’ll also be streaming the audio on-line at wtvbam.com. The varsity is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 following the j-v game with is set to start at 6 pm. The Coldwater freshmen have a 4:30 game against Vicksburg. And tonight in boys basketball, Union City has a makeup game at home against Jonesville.
