Walk-off grand slam from Rajai Davis gives Tigers 5-4 win over Oakland in series opener

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Detroit Tigers used a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of ninth by Rajai Davis for a 5-4 win over the A's at Comerica Park. It was a fitting end to the evening on which Detroit honored the 30th anniversary of its 1984 World Series team. Detroit trailed 4-1 after a 3 run rally in the eighth inning by Oakland.

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the victory. The Davis blast gave Tiger reliever Blaine Hardy his first career win.

Detroit’s lead atop the American League Central stayed at 3-and-a-half games over second place Kansas City, which won last night at Minnesota. The Tigers tonight will send Rick Porcello to the mound against the A’s in the middle game of the 3-game series. Oakland’s loss last night snapped their 4 game winning streak. The A’s continue to have the best record in the majors at 51-31 while Detroit is  45-34.

The White Sox game in Chicago last night with the Angels was rained out while the Cubs blanked Boston 2-0 at Fenway Park.
