Rick Porcello gets second straight shutout as Tigers beat Oakland 4-0, look for sweep this afternoon

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Rick Porcello tossed a complete-game four-hitter last night as the Tigers blanked the Athletics 4-0 at Comerica Park. Porcello improved to 11-and-4, allowing just one extra base hit along the way. He’s the first Detroit pitcher to throw back to back shutouts since Jack Morris tossed 3 straight in 1986. Porcello also is the fourth pitcher in franchise history with a shutout that included no walks or strikeouts which last happened for the Tigers in 1944 with Dizzy Trout.

Detroit’s offense last night was sparked by J.D. Martinez, who had a two run homer and a double. The victory boosted the first place Tigers lead in the American League Central to 4-and-a-half games over the second place Royals as Kansas City fell to the Twins 10-2 at Minnesota. Justin Verlander goes to the mound for Detroit this afternoon as the Tigers shoot for a 3-game sweep over the A’s.

The Chicago White Sox were swept by the Angels 8-4 and 7-5 in a doubleheader last night in Chicago while the Cubs got by the Red Sox 2-1 at Fenway Park.
