COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Extra patrols targeting drunk drivers have already begun for this 4th of July holiday weekend, although so far in Branch County, at last word, no one has been arrested for drinking and driving since one person was booked on Monday for operating while impaired. By the way, those special patrols won’t end when the weekend is over.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety planning is extending the enforcement period through two weekends because history shows that it’s a dangerous period for drivers in Michigan. During last year’s Fourth of July drunk driving crackdown, 115 motorists were arrested for drunk driving. There were 19 traffic deaths and over 40% of them involved drunk drivers.
