BRAZIL (WTVB) - The World Cup could be headed to the United States. FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke told a Brazilian newspaper that the Americans' interest in the tournament is staggering. Valcke believes after 2022, the U.S. will have interest in hosting the World Cup in 2026. ESPN reports an estimated 21.6 million people watched Belgium knock out Team U.S.A. from the tournament on U.S. television Tuesday afternoon, a viewership total exceeding the numbers for the most recent World Series and NBA Finals.
The World Cup continues Friday with two quarterfinal matches. Germany will take on France, and host country Brazil will face Columbia as the teams hit the pitch with hopes of reaching the final four of the World Cup.
