Verlander and Tigers overcome 5 run deficit, pound Dodgers 14-5 Tuesday night

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers rallied last night to beat the Dodgers  14-5, getting Justin Verlander off the hook after the Detroit starter was tagged for five runs in the first inning. Verlander settled down the rest of the way, holding Los Angeles scoreless over the next 5 frames to record his 14th straight interleague start without a loss. The Tigers tied the game with 5 runs in the bottom of the second and then pulled away with an offense that went off for 20 hits on the night.

The Detroit victory at Comerica Park snapped a 3-game skid and padded the first place Tigers lead in the American League Central to 4-and-a-half games over the second place Royals, who lost at Tampa Bay. Rajai Davis went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s to pace the Tiger’s attack that also featured  3 hits and 2 rbi’s apiece from Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter while Nick Castellanos and J.D. Martinez both went 3-for-5 in the rout.

The Tigers and Dodgers will wrap up the brief 2 game series this afternoon with Max Scherzer on the mound for Detroit. The Tigers then head out to Kansas City and 4 games with the Royals beginning tomorrow night as baseball moves toward the All-Star break and the mid-summer classic contest next Tuesday at Minnesota’s Target Field.

The Chicago White Sox last night cruised past the struggling Red Sox 8-3 at Fenway Park while the Cubs Tuesday afternoon lost 4-2 at Cincinnati.
