KANASAS CITY, MO (WTVB) - The Tigers failed yesterday to finish off a 4-game sweep over the Royals, who rallied with five runs in the seventh inning to knock off Detroit 5-2 at Kauffman Stadium. Despite the loss, the first place Tigers head into the All-Star break with a 6-and-a-half game American League Central lead over the second place Royals. Former Tiger Omar Infante had a key hit in the Kansas City comeback with a 2-run single that put the Royals up 4-2. Justin Verlander was cruising along with a 2-hitter through six innings before the Royals opened the seventh with 4 straight singles and along with a groundout they tied the score at two-two and Verlander’s day was done.
The defeat dropped Verlander’s record to 8-8. Infante’s 2-out single came off reliever Al Alburquerque. All nine Detroit hits were singles including 3 apiece for Rajai Davis and J.D. Martinez.
The Tigers return to action following the break for tomorrow night’s All-Star game at Target Field in Minneapolis with a 4-game series at home against the Indians beginning Friday night.
The Chicago White Sox lost 3-2 yesterday at Cleveland while the Cubs fell 10-7 to the Braves at Wrigley Field. Tonight at Target Field, it’s the Home Run Derby.
