COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County and neighboring Hillsdale and St. Joseph Counties have several businesses that specialize in tattoos, cosmetic tattoos and body piercing. The Health Department in Coldwater has issued a safety advisory about body crafting which is becoming a mainstream art form, with one out of every four persons from ages 18-25 in the United States having a tattoo or body piercing.
The Community Health Agency says with the increase in popularity of body art, it’s important to keep yourself free from disease. Officials say be sure to only use state licensed body art facilities for these procedures that are invasive processes that can be associated with serious health risks including such as Hepatitis B and C as well as the HIV virus in addition to possible skin infections such as MRSA. In 2010, the State of Michigan passed a law that requires on-site facility inspections of body art facilities.
