DETROIT (WTVB) - The first place Tigers and Anibal Sanchez were cruising along last night against the Indians as play resumed after the All-Star break. Detroit had a 3-0 lead before Cleveland exploded for 7 runs in the seventh and the Indians went on to beat the Tigers 9-3 in the opener of a 4-game series at Comerica Park. Detroit had 11 hits but went just 3-12 with runners in scoring position. Alex Avilla and Miguel Cabrera had 2 hits apiece for the Tigers as did DH Victor Martinez, who returned to the lineup after being out of action since the Fourth of July with a strained lower right side. Sanchez went six-plus innings in taking the loss with six hits allowed on 4 earned runs with 7 strikeouts and one walk as he dropped to 6-4. Detroit is 6-and-a half games up on the Indians, who are now tied for second place with the White Sox, who beat Houston last night 3-2 in Chicago. The Cubs lost 5-4 at Arizona. It’s a day night doubleheader today for the Tigers and the Tribe in Detroit before the series comes to a close tomorrow afternoon.
