COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A power outage Monday at the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities wastewater treatment facility caused untreated sewage influent to be discharged to the Sauk River. The CBPU reported the incident Tuesday afternoon and said the discharge started around 6:10 pm Monday and lasted about 25 minutes.
The utility says it has notified officials with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality through the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency. The CBPU is sampling several points along and down river from the point of discharge. The results of the initial samples are due back tomorrow and will be reported to the Health Agency.
Officials say there is a possibility that the fecal coliform counts may be elevated, so for the next few days, it’s recommended the public avoid full body contact with the water in the area between the CBPU wastewater treatment facility and the Rotary Park public access.
