COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A Coldwater man has been found competent to stand trial after being charged with open murder in the death of a 7-month old boy this spring. The ruling today in Branch County District Court concerned the case of 43-year-old Steven Shaw, who underwent a forensic psychiatric exam two weeks ago at the request of his attorney. Shaw is being held without bond.
He was living with the mother of the victim Carson Burm and was alone with an older sister in an apartment on Cutter Avenue in Coldwater when City Police say Shaw called 911 for emergency assistance on May 28th. The infant boy had stopped breathing and was pronounced dead the next day after being airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. The details have not all been released, but the trauma suffered by the child did not match Shaw’s description of what happened, and he was arrested June 1, 2014.
A District Court preliminary exam for Shaw has been set for September 3, 2014.
