PHEONIX, AZ (WTVB) - The Tiger’s bullpen failed last night to hold a late lead at Arizona and the Diamondbacks downed Detroit 5-4. The first place Tigers and D-Backs will play the rubber game of the 3-game set this afternoon before Detroit moves on to Anaheim for a 4-game series with the Angels.
The Tigers rallied last night in the top of the eighth on a 2-run single by Torii Hunter to go ahead 4-3. But in the bottom of the frame, reliever Phil Coke issued a pair of one out walks. Al Alburquerque was next out of the Detroit bullpen and after retiring one batter, walked the next hitter. Arizona then got a bases-loaded 2-run single off Ian Krol to retake the lead they wouldn’t give back. Coke was tagged with the loss and it cost Detroit starter Rick Porcello what could have been his league-leading 13th win. Porcello’s no-decision followed 7 strong innings with 3 runs allowed on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks. Detroit leadoff batter Austin Jackson went 2-for-5 giving him 5 straight multi-hit games.
The loss cut the Tiger’s lead in the American League Central to 5-and-a-half games over the second place Indians, who won last night at Minnesota. Anibal Sanchez goes to the mound for Detroit this afternoon at Arizona.
The White Sox were whipped 7-1 by the Royals last night in Chicago while the Cubs snapped their 5-game skid, blanking the Padres 6-0 at Wrigley Field.
