TIgers look to beef up bullpen, acquiring Joakim Soria from Texas

Detroit relief pitcher Joakim Soria, acquired Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from the Texas Rangers

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Detroit announced a trade Wednesday night to add some depth to their weak bullpen, acquiring Texas closer Joakim Soria in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects. The Tigers had to part ways with rookie reliever Cory Knebel and right-hander Jake Thompson, who is ranked the Tiger’s number five overall prospect.

The 30-year Soria is a 2-time All-Star and will start out as a late-inning setup man but stay at the ready to take over the closer duties should reliever Joe Nathan’s up and down struggles continue. Nathan pitched last season at Texas with Soria.
