Max Scherzer strong as Tigers beat Angels 6-4 in series opener at Anaheim

ANAHEIM, CA (WTVB) - The Tigers last night beat the Angels 6-4 at Anaheim to open a 4-game series. The Detroit win improved their major league best road mark to 31-17 and came against the team that has the top home record in the majors this season. The victory also snapped the Tigers 6 game losing streak at Anaheim while boosting their American League Central Division lead over second place Kansas City to seven games.

Winning pitcher Max Scherzer pitched seven strong innings of 3 run ball with 11 strikeouts to outduel Angels ace Garrett Richards while beleaguered closer Joe Nathan shined for Detroit as he struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his 21st save. Nick Castellanos had a key hit with a go-ahead 2-run double in the sixth inning to make it 4-3 Detroit. His two bagger followed Torii Hunter’s RBI double which started the Tiger’s rally. And Austin Jackson went 2-for-5 for Detroit for his seventh straight multi-hit game.

Drew Smyly gets the start tonight for the Tigers against the Angels.
