COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A 41-year old Coldwater man was formally charged yesterday afternoon in Branch County District Court with open murder in connection with the death last Friday of a 7-month old boy. Steven Shaw was ordered held without bond for allegedly killing Carson Burm. Coldwater City Police say the victim was discovered not breathing Thursday afternoon when medical first responders arrived at the home where he lived at 299 Cutter Avenue. The child died Friday at Bronson hospital in Kalamazoo. Carson Burm was the son of Laura Kidney of Coldwater and Victor Burm of Holly.
WXMI Fox 17 News reports Carson’s family told them that the suspect, Shaw, is Kidney’s fiancé and that he was babysitting the boy when 911 received a call Thursday from Shaw that the Carson was unresponsive. According to the family, the victim also suffered a shattered skull.
Shaw is scheduled back in court for a preliminary hearing on June 12th with his preliminary examination set for June 17th.
Services for Carson Burm are tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Union City at Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation with visitation prior to the funeral beginning at 11 a.m. at the Lighthouse.
