COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County Jail is bulging at the seams again with prisoners today with a higher inmate count that it hasn’t seen since the beginning of April. That’s because 16 people were booked into the lockup on Friday, bringing the inmate total to 150. That’s 8 prisoners over the rated capacity for the outdated facility.
The last couple of months have generally brought fewer arrests than earlier this year. An overcrowding emergency in February resulted in sentence reductions and the early release of 13 prisoners. A similar situation was barely averted at the end of March. The summer months normally bring the highest number of bookings at the jail and it remains to be seen if Friday’s spike in arrests is a sign of things to come. 11 males and 5 females were jailed on Friday.
