COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - 23 people have been arrested in Branch County since Friday and that means the county jail is once again faced with overcrowded conditions. Most of the arrests happened on Friday when there were 16 bookings. The inmate count today to begin the day was 150, eight above the rated capacity for the outdated facility. The last couple of months have generally brought fewer arrests than earlier this year.
An overcrowding emergency in February resulted in sentence reductions and the early release of 13 prisoners. A similar situation was barely averted at the end of March. The summer months normally bring the highest number of bookings at the jail and it remains to be seen if this recent spike in arrests is a sign of things to come.
