Coldwater baseball and Bronson softball teams lose in regional finals Saturday, Union City bows out in semi-finals

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the spring season for all county teams ended Saturday in the MHSAA Regionals with Coldwater's baseball team and Bronson's softball team both losing in the finals, while Union City's baseball team was eliminated in the semi-finals. In baseball, at the Division Two Otsego Regional, Coldwater won their opening game holding on for a 3-2 win over Niles. Then in the championship game against Gull Lake, the Cardinals took an early 3-0 first inning lead but the Blue Devils tied it up with 3 runs in the third before pulling away to down Coldwater 8-3. In the Cardinal’s semi-final victory, Grant Mauer went the distance to earn the win with a 5-hitter and he helped his own cause at the plate with two hits, including a rbi triple. Ian Wright took the loss in the in the title contest while Brandon Lewis had two hits with an rbi and a run scored. Coldwater finished the season with a 25-17 record.

At the Bronson Division 3 Regional, Union City was defeated by Decatur in the semi-finals 15-2. Hunter Johns suffered the loss while Kenyon Stuchell had the Charger’s only hit and scored both runs. Union City ended with a record of 15-18. Decatur went on to capture the regional title with a 3-1 win over Berrien Springs.

In softball, at the Bronson Division 3 Regional, second-ranked Bronson fell 3-0 to Coloma in the championship game. All of the Comet’s runs were unearned as Bronson committed 5 errors. In the semi-finals, Bronson beat Hartford 12-2. The Lady Vikings finished the season with a 36-5 record.
