Coldwater girls soccer team again named Academic All State, Morrison and Bowers selected co-MVP's

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - For the second straight season, the Coldwater High School girls varsity soccer team has been named Academic All State by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association. The announcement was made at last night's soccer awards banquet. Seniors Meghan Schorfhaar and Morgan Klein also picked up individual Academic All-State honors.

Schorfhaar, Maggie Morrison, Kaitlyn Vella, and Shelby Bowers were named to the All District Team, while Bowers and Schorfhaar were named to the SMAC East All Division Team.  Morgan Klein, Maggie Morrison, and Carlee Smoker were named Honorable Mention.

In awards voted on by their teammates, Shelby Bowers and Maggie Morrison were named co-MVP's. Kaitlyn Vella was selected Best Offensive Player, Morrison Best Defensive Player, Schorfhaar and Klein Hardest Workers, Preslie Bergman named Most Improved, and Hailey Danielson and Ali Germann co-Rookies of the Year. Madison Marsh was named MVP of the junior varsity team. The Lady Cardinals finished the year with a 10-9 record.

The girls soccer state semi-finals are tomorrow with the four title matches set for Saturday. Today, it’s the MHSAA baseball and softball tournament quarterfinals. A trio of SMAC East baseball teams are still alive in the second season, including Harper Creek and Gull Lake, who battle each other this afternoon at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. It was Gull Lake that knocked Coldwater out of the tournament last weekend in the Division Two Otsego Regional Final.
