Max Scherzer's complete game helps Detroit snap losing streak in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL (WTVB) - The Tigers stopped a 3-game skid last night and Max Scherzer tossed his first career complete game as Detroit blanked the White Sox 4-0 in Chicago. Scherzer struck out eight while giving up just three hits and three walks as he improved to 8-and-2 in his 179th career start.

Victor Martinez’ home run in the fifth put Detroit up 1-0 and then Miguel Cabrera gave Scherzer some breathing room with two rbi’s on an infield single in the eighth. Bryan Holaday went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the victory. Scherzer outdueled Chris Sale, who allowed only one run while fanning 10 in seven frames.

Chicago had won the first two of the rain shortened three-game series. The victory leaves Detroit with a 2-and-a-half game lead in the American League Central over Kansas City with the White Sox and Indians another game back and the Minnesota Twins in last place but just 4 games out. The Tigers start a 3-game home series with the Twins tonight with Drew Smyly on the mound for Detroit.

The Chicago Cubs were shutout 4-0 last night by the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
