COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County jail remains jammed up with prisoners beyond its rated capacity now for the seventh day in-a-row with a reported 156 inmates to begin the day this morning. The capacity for the outdated facility is 142 and since the population has been above that for a week straight, it’s the signal for the courts to be notified that an overcrowding emergency exists. It’s already happened once this year, in February, and that resulted in the court ordering sentence reductions and the early release of 13 prisoners. A similar situation was barely averted on two other occasions.
