COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Monthly, we let you know what the jobless rate is for Branch County. Will the unemployment figures have any bearing on how you vote this fall? Upjohn Institute Economist Dr. Geroge Erickcek says he doesn’t put much stock in the numbers reported by most media outlets and he thinks voters probably shouldn’t either. He says there are two ways to collect the data, either by counting the jobless in the community, or by counting the employed. He says they are either working or they are not. He says there are too many variables on trying to count those who don’t have jobs.
Erickcek says as you hear the jobless numbers heading into the election, remember where they come from, that’s the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, and according to Erickcek, those numbers can’t be trusted.
