CLEVELAND (WTVB) - The Tigers are back in first place in the American League Central. Last night, Detroit held on for a 6-4 win at Cleveland while the Kansas City Royals lost 7-5 at Seattle. The Tigers switch places with the Royals and take a half game lead over K.C. with Detroit’s back-to-back wins and the Royals dropping two straight after their 10-game winning streak. Hot hitting J.D. Martinez hit the eventual game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning for the Tigers, putting them ahead 5-0. He has 4 homers in his last 5 games and is on a 10-game hitting streak. Victor Martinez had given Detroit the early lead in the fourth with a 2-run homer. The Indians answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Ian Krol. Detroit added an insurance run in the ninth on an rbi double by Ian Kinsler. Joe Nathan locked up his 15th save for the Tigers. Detroit starter Rick Porcello allowed six hits in six scoreless innings to improve to 9-4. Porcello is 9-3 lifetime against the Indians. Justin Verlander goes to the mound tonight for the Tigers at Cleveland.

The White Sox fell 5-4 last night at Minnesota while the Cubs beat the Pirates 6-3 Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
