COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Despite a change in time and location, plus a monsoon-like rain that hit the fairgrounds shortly after the event started, this year's Branch County Relay for Life has raised almost $100,000 for the fight against cancer. The official total Sunday morning was $96,071, but Relay Chairperson Jamie Tobalske says more money is expected before the final wrap-up on August 31. The goal for this year's Relay for Life was $112,000.
28 teams set up camp sites at the Branch County Fairgrounds for this year's relay, which ran from 10 am Saturday until 10 am Sunday. Heavy rains and strong winds hit the fairgrounds shortly after 2 pm Saturday, forcing paricipants to find cover and moving the auction inside the 4-H Cabin. That auction still managed to raise $3,549.
The top fundraising team for this year's Relay for Life was St Mark's Episcopal Church, raising $13,390.
