COLDWATER (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the girls basketball season for county teams came to a close last night and we had the action on the radio when Bronson lost to Mendon 51-18 in the title game of the Mendon Class-C District. The Hornets defense keyed their win, holding Bronson to single digit scoring in every quarter. Mendon led 24-9 at halftime and they were up 38-17 heading into the final period on their way to improving their record to 18-2. Skyler Sobeski had 11 points and was our McDonalds Player of the Game for Bronson, which ended the year with an 11-9 record.
In Class B, the team that eliminated Coldwater in the opening week of the state tournament on Wednesday picked up a championship trophy last night as Three Rivers stopped Sturgis 49-30 in the finals of the Sturgis District.
And in Class-D, Athens advanced to next week’s regionals by beating Colon 51-18 in the Burr Oak District title game.
The MHSAA boys basketball state tournament tips off next week including Coldwater taking on Edwardsburg Monday night in the first round of the Three Rivers Class B District. We’ll have the 7 o’clock game on the radio with our live coverage starting at 6:30. Meanwhile, Bronson, Quincy, and Union City begin their March Magic journey at the Bronson Class C district including Monday night’s quarterfinal matchup between the host Vikings and Union City.
The 41st annual Coldwater Noon Exchange Club Freshman boys basketball tournament at Legg Middle School concludes today with 4 games including the host Coldwater Cardinals playing for third place against Pennfield at 5:30 p.m. The championship contest between Marshall and Angola is set for 7:15 tonight.
In wrestling, 3 days of competition in the MHSAA individual finals wraps up today at the Palace of Auburn Hills and 3 wrestlers from Bronson will be on the mats on championship Saturday with a chance to win a Division 4 third place medals. Brett Burtrum, Kahle Scheenks and Jukoada Sexton will all see action today while the Viking’s other two finals qualifiers, David Erwin and Skyler Riker were eliminated on Friday.
Today in gymnastics, Coldwater begins post season competition with the Regionals at Rockford.
And in the MHSAA Bowling Singles Finals today, in Division Two, Coldwater’s Austen Reichhart and Dana Bailey are taking part in the roll-off at Century Lanes in Waterford.
