COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the second season in boys basketball tips off this week with MHSAA state tournament action including March Magic openers tonight for Coldwater, Bronson and Union City. Coldwater plays Edwardsburg at 7 o’clock in the Three Rivers Class B District. We’ll have the game on the radio with our live coverage beginning at 6:45. The winner advances to take on Three Rivers Wednesday night in the semi-finals.

Bronson is hosting a Class-C District and the Vikings will face off against cross-county rival Union City tonight at 7:30. The survivor will play Reading in Wednesday’s semi-finals. In the other semi-final, it will be Quincy again either Mendon or Hillsdale, who play this evening at six o’clock. There was a lot happening Saturday for county teams in post season competition.

In wrestling, in the state individual finals, 3 of the 5 wrestlers from Bronson who made it to the Palace of Auburn Hills placed in their weight divisions with each of the juniors earning All-State honors. Leading the way was Brett Burtrum with a fourth place finish while Kahle Scheenks finished sixth and Jukoada Sexton seventh.

In gymnastics, Coldwater closed out its season at the MHSAA Rockford Regional, finishing sixth out of the 12 teams in the field while earning their highest score of the season at 128.45. The top 3 teams advance to the state finals and Grand Ledge, five time state champions won the tournament on Saturday. Coldwater’s performance allowed the Lady Cardinals to improve by one place over their 2013 showing at the Regionals. While Coldwater did not advance anyone to the state finals, several gymnasts were just shy of placing in the top 8.  Junior Jenny Daoud finished 9th on the uneven bars and senior Ellie Ohm placed 10th, just missing the chance to advance in Division 2.  On the vault, Ohm and Amanda Daoud once again tied for 10th place. There were 78 competitors in Division 2, but only the top 6 all-around scores advanced to state finals. Ohm posted a personal best total score for the season at 32.9 to 15th in the Region to close out her career. Becca Harmon also closed out her career with a season best tally of 32.325 to place 23rd overall. Junior Jenny Daoud was 26th at 31.9.

in bowling on Saturday, in the MHSAA Division Two singles finals, two senior bowlers from Coldwater competed and in the boys roll-off, Austen Reichhart finished 40th while on the girls side, Dana Bailey placed 48th.
