BRONSON (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, there’s only one county basketball team left in the second season after Union City’s win over Reading and Quincy’s loss to Hillsdale last night in their games we had on the radio from the boys MHSAA Bronson Class C District semi-finals.

Union City extended Reading’s losing streak dating back to last season to 28 games as the Chargers cruised past the Rangers 58-37. Sophomore guard Elijah Way led the way in the win with 11 points off the bench and was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Union City. The Chargers took control early with a 15-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and by halftime they were up 30-9 and Union City was on its way to improving their record to 8-13.

The Chargers will have their hands full in tomorrow night’s district title game against Hillsdale following their 67-51 win over Quincy. The Hornets and Orioles were tied at 25 at halftime last night and then Hillsdale started to pull away, doubling up Quincy 26-13 in the third quarter. Jake Rider had 14 points in the loss while Jimmy King added 10 and King was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for the Orioles, who finish their fine season with a 16-5 record. Hillsdale, which was honorable mention in the last Class-C rankings, is now 21-1.

Friday night’s Union City-Hillsdale District title game tips off at 6 o’clock and our live coverage from Bronson on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 starts at 5:30 following the Evening Journal. The District champion moves on in March Magic to next week’s regionals at Jonesville.

Last night at the Litchfield Class D district, the season ended for Coldwater Pansophia Academy with their 54-47 loss to North Adams-Jerome.
