DETROIT (WKZO) -- Authorities in Detroit are pushing for new rules to expedite the testing of sexual assault evidence kits
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy was joined by "Law and Order SVU" actress Mariska Hargitay at a news conference Monday to outline the initiative. Hargitay's foundation is working on a documentary about the discovery of thousands of untested rape kits in Detroit.
More than eleven-thousand of the untested kits dating back to the 1980s were found in a Detroit Police storage facility in 2009. DNA testing of about 1,600 of those kits has already helped identify 100 serial rapists.
