Michigan House passes measure to phase-out of some telephone landlines

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Over the objections of the AARP and some northern Michigan Lawmakers, the State House has approved a telecommunications bill that would give telephone companies more flexibility to drop land lines for digital technology. State Representative Ken Kurtz of Coldwater voted in favor of the measure.

Opponents say it could leave some homeowners without access to the more reliable home based phones that are wired into the wall.  Representative Ed McGroom of the Upper Peninsula says there are areas in his district with no cell towers but Representative Aric Nesbitt of Lawton says all that is protected in the legislation. The package of bills now heads back to the Senate, which already passed the measures and will consider House changes before it goes to Governor Snyder.
