COLDWATER (WTVB) - The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency’s Board of Health has released its “Certificates of Excellence” in food service for the year 2013. The awards went to food establishments that were able to meet stringent criteria during the year. Specifically, the facility must have had no Priority or Priority foundation items and no more than three core items cited during their onsite inspection. Rebecca Burns, Environment Health Director says Priority items, if found to be in violation, could result in foodborne illnesses. Core items relate to general sanitation and/or maintenance. According to Burns, 97 tri-county food service establishments, restaurants, bars, catering kitchens and schools received this year’s award, including 27 in Branch County. Food service inspections are normally performed twice in a year. Food service managers are offered food safety training by the department annually to train food service workers in proper food handling and preparation.
